Housing Prices

In Markham, there are a variety of housing types available in great neighborhoods depending on an individual's budget. Being located in a central spot in the Greater Toronto Area means that demand is high for housing in Markham. By the year 2051, Markham's population is projected to grow to 611,800. The City is making an effort to guide the development of the different housing types that will be needed to accommodate a growing city.

Mother Tongue, 2021

Markham residents speak many languages. In 2021, the top 2 mother tongue languages spoken by residents include English at 36.0%, and Chinese at 40.1%. Ten percent of residents also listed South Asian languages as their mother tongue.

A Growing Population

By 2041, Markham's population is projected to increase to nearly half a million people, and grow to 611,800 by the year 2051. The city continues to be a huge draw for those looking for employment in knowledge-based industries, in addition to a safe community to live in - whether as an individual or as a family.

Educational Attainment

Markham residents are highly educated. For the population ages 25 to 64, 71.4% have at least some post-secondary education. This number is higher than Ontario's rate of 67.8% and Canada's rate of 67.2%. It is also noteworthy that 48.7% of Markham's 25 to 65 year old age group hold a bachelor's degree or higher, compared to Ontario and Canada's rate of 36.8% and 32.9%, respectively.

Construction Values

In 2022, there was over $2 billion CAD worth of approved building permits. The vast majority were residential permits, coming in at $1.5 billion CAD, followed by extensive activity in the industrial, commercial, and institutional space, which saw over $288 million CAD of activity.
