SCOOTY
About the Demonstration
The City of Markham has approved a demo project to bring electric scooters and electric bikes to Downtown Markham through the support of the Ontario Vehicle Innovation Network.
Scooty is partnering with the City of Markham, Remington Group, York University and other Markham-based businesses to launch a pilot of 100 e-Scooters and 25 e-Bikes in Downtown Markham. There will be 11 required designated parking zones across Downtown Markham.
Public is able to use the SCOOTY app to access any SCOOTY e-Scooter, or e-Bike found at one of the many designated parking zones within the Markham Downtown area. Riders may enjoy using the micro-mobility vehicle to travel across the Markham Downtown area before ending their ride at another designated parking location.
This demonstration aims to bridge commuter gaps by enabling an easily accessible First and Last mile solution for all wanting to enjoy Markham’s Downtown area.

The Ontario Government has invested $2.5 million into the OVIN Demonstration Zone, and the City of Vaughan and City of Markham have invested a combined $1.4 million. This money pays for infrastructure and staff to support the Demonstration Zone.
The selected partners would be responsible for their demo program operations and advertising once up and running.
Micromobility, as approved by Markham’s Council, refers to transportation over short distances provided by a range of small, lightweight vehicles operating at speeds typically under 25 km/h and driven by one user/rider at a time. Examples include bikes, electric bikes (e-bikes) and electric scooters (e-Scooters) and other light electric vehicles.
Benefits include providing a sustainable transportation option to everyone in the community while solving public transit’s first-mile and last-mile challenges, reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, supporting active transportation, improving road safety, improving transportation choice and cost of living, reducing car use and congestion, and supporting the tourism economy.
Vehicles and devices operating in the Demonstration Zone are subject to some of the following regulations under the Highway Traffic Act that stipulate vehicle and operator safety criteria which must be met.
Electric kick-scooters (e-Scooters), are electrically powered two-wheeled vehicles that the rider operates while standing. They are generally designed with a standing platform between the front and rear wheels, a steering handlebar, and are equipped with a hand brake, lights, bell and kick-stand.
A power-assisted bicycle, also called an electric bicycle or e-Bike, is a bicycle with an electric motor that has:
- a handlebar for steering
- working pedals
- two or three wheels
- an electric motor
- braking systems
Locations will vary. Designated pick up and drop off points will be available. The public will be able to find the available service through the Scooty app.
Standard riding rate is $1.15 to unlock + $0.35 per minute to ride e-scooters. SCOOTY offers discounted ride passes available on the SCOOTY mobile application. First time riders can enter promo code: SCOOTY5 for $5 in wallet credits.
Discounted ride pass options include:
- StudentPass30 ($4.99)
- DayPass90 ($9.99)
- WeekPass420 ($29.99)
Please visit Scooty's app and website for more information.
The use of helmets is strongly encouraged. Helmets must be worn by e-Scooter riders under the age of 18.
For this demo project, vehicles will be geo-fenced and speed will be locked to 15 km/h or 20 km/h in certain locations.
Our partners will be responsible to educate users on proper parking procedures, such as not blocking the sidewalk clearway path of travel, obstructing features such as utility accesses, garbage bins, or doorways, or curbside zones reserved for uses such as buses, taxis or loading. Please refer to their app and website for more information.
Members of the public will be able to report improper operations/use and our partners will be required to address issues within a defined time period.
Under provincial laws and regulations, users must be at least 16 years old to operate an electric vehicle on a public roadway in Ontario.
Our partners will work with the City to guarantee proper use. Members of the public will be able to report improper operations/use and our partners will be required to address issues within a defined time period.
You can contact the City and submit your feedback and concerns throughout the duration of the OVIN Demonstration Zone program.
The City and members of the public should report improperly parked/operated vehicles directly to our partners.
