How Markham-based VCycene Creates a Cleaner, Healthier Future for Canadians

Apr 08, 2024

George Yin, the founder and CEO of VCycene, sees his innovative cleantech company as his mission to tackle the major problem of food waste in Canada.

Previously working in the food processing industry, George witnessed the impact of excessive food waste first hand, and realized that the problem is much more urgent than he originally anticipated.

According to the National Zero Waste Council’s research on household food waste in Canada, almost 2.3 million tonnes of edible food is wasted each year, equating to 2.1 million cars on the road emitting harmful greenhouse gas. Costing Canadians in excess of $21 billion each year, there is no doubt that food waste has significant economic, social, and environmental impacts to Canada.

Canadians waste approximately $1,700 worth of food per household each year with much of which is still edible, due in part to factors such as over-purchasing, cosmetics standards as well as the lack of knowledge in food preservation and storage techniques. What’s worse, is that 50% of the leftovers could be avoided, through leftovers and untouched food that could have been consumed with better planning and storage.
